Zelenskyy Affirms Readiness for Conflict-Time Polls After Remarks from U.S. President Donald Trump.
Ukrainian leader Zelenskyy has declared he is prepared to organize a national election amid the current war, if the Verkhovna Rada and foreign partners allow it. This statement is a response to accusations from the U.S. President that he was refusing to relinquish control.
Obviously frustrated by the intervention from overseas, Zelenskyy underscored that "This is a matter for the citizens of Ukraine, and not for individuals from other nations, with all necessary respect to our allies."
However, he vowed to explore avenues for scheduling a poll in the coming months. "Since this issue is now being raised by the President of the U.S., our key partner, I will respond succinctly: look, I am willing for elections," Zelenskyy said on Tuesday evening.
"In addition, I am calling on ... the U.S. to assist me, possibly together with EU counterparts, to ensure protection for the polls, and then within the following 60-90 day period Ukraine will be prepared to conduct the elections. I personally have the determination and willingness for this," he continued.
Trump's Criticism and Ukrainian Constitutional Situation
The comments were expressed by Trump in a lengthy interview published by the publication Politico earlier on Tuesday. "They haven't had an election in a while," said the U.S. president. "Consider this, they claim to be a democratic nation, but it reaches a point where it's no longer democratic any more."
Zelenskyy's presidential term officially ended in May of last year, but the nation's constitution forbids elections in a time of armed conflict. Even, his critics have stated repeatedly that safety and political realities prevent holding an election during hostilities.
"It would only be detrimental," commented Serhiy Rakhmanin. "Zelenskyy is the commander-in-chief, and the country is in a position where we lack that option, regardless of disagreements we might have with him. It would only benefit the opponent," he concluded.
Logistical and Legal Hurdles
Zelenskyy pointed out two key questions that need solving: the logistical challenge of enabling soldiers, millions of internally displaced persons, and those in occupied territories to cast ballots, and additionally, how to legally conduct a vote given that a state of war is active.
He requested counsel from allies on safeguarding the elections, and from members of parliament on how to modify the legislation to enable a election. "{I am expecting suggestions from allies, I am waiting for suggestions from our MPs, and I am willing to go to the elections," said Zelenskyy.
Broader Diplomatic Background
Zelenskyy made these remarks while traveling back to Ukraine after concluding a round of talks to various EU nations. This occurs while the White House has reportedly been increasing pressure on Kyiv to accept a settlement.
Recently, Trump's son, Donald Trump Jr., asserted at a forum that Zelenskyy was extending the war due to fears of being ousted. He also suggested that his father might "disengage" from Ukraine if the conflict continues. "{It's not correct. But it's not entirely wrong," commented Trump, when asked about his son's allegation.
Reports indicate that the U.S. has suggested Ukraine should cede the Donbas region to secure peace, a proposal that would be deeply controversial within Ukraine. Additionally, there is as of now no sign that Russia is ready to agree to any agreement, including one that might appear favorable to Moscow.
