Utah Prosecuting Attorneys Charge Accused in Activist Killing with Capital Homicide
Utah prosecutors on this week formally charged Tyler Robinson, the 22-year-old alleged of killing conservative activist Charlie Kirk, with first-degree homicide—and announced they will seek the death penalty if he is convicted.
Legal Accusations and Case Circumstances
Specific charges filed comprise aggravated murder, felony discharge of a firearm, and obstruction of justice. County Attorney Jeff Gray stated that factors elevating the charge included the victim’s public statements and the presence of children during the shooting.
“I do not choice made lightly,” the prosecutor said. “And it is a decision was reached independently on the available evidence.”
Case Details and Alleged Motive
Investigators allege that Robinson instructed his housemate to delete damaging text messages and not speak to police. According to reports, Robinson’s parent told law enforcement that her son had grown increasingly ideological and had begun shifting toward progressive views, including support for LGBTQ+ rights.
Robinson was reportedly in a relationship with his housemate, who was undergoing a gender transition.
Scene of the Shooting
The victim was shot during an appearance at UVU moments following a remark about trans people and gun violence. Video of the event showed the shooting.
Apprehension and Proof
Robinson was arrested the day after after people close to him recognized him from released images. He surrendered with the help of a family friend who was a law enforcement official.
Before his arrest, Robinson apparently admitted to the shooting in a message on the chat platform, stating: “Hey guys, I have bad news, it was me at UVU yesterday.”
Authorities also revealed that genetic material matching Robinson was found on a towel placed on the firearm thought to have been used in the shooting. The gun was discarded near the university.
Text Messages and Engraved Ammunition
Further evidence included a text message from Robinson to his roommate that stated: “I had the opportunity to take out Charlie Kirk, and I will to do it.”
Officials also found cartridges with engraved inscriptions including internet memes, gaming references, and lyrics from an anti-fascist anthem. One inscription read: “Hey fascist! CATCH!”
Legal Proceedings and Detention
Robinson will remain in custody denied bond due to the prosecution’s intent to seek the capital sentence. He was set to be presented in court for an initial appearance.
The prosecutor referred to the killing as “an American tragedy,” stating that Kirk was killed while exercising First Amendment rights.
