Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with France's air force in a joint strike targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory employed by the IS group, according to the UK Ministry of Defence.

The site, located using reconnaissance, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was positioned in mountains just north of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft employed Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a series of entry passages leading to the site... preliminary assessments indicate the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the strike on Saturday evening and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - also known as Daesh - established militant control over large swathes of Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This action demonstrates British leadership, and determination to work closely with our partners, to eradicate any resurgence of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary stated.

UK warplanes have performed overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of the group after its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I must thank all the members of British forces who took part in this operation for their expertise and their bravery," the Defence Secretary commented. "Including them were a great many British personnel deployed over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to remove terrorist threats who threaten our way of life, demonstrates how British military are always on standby, continuously, protecting the UK at home and powerful internationally."

Last December, the United States armed forces executed what it described as a "large-scale strike" targeting IS targets in the country, after an attack claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations estimates Islamic State still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in both countries.
