Formula 1 racer Liam Lawson disclosed he came dangerously close to a potentially deadly accident during Sunday's Mexican Grand Prix when two marshals darted across the track directly in front of him

The alarming incident took place on the third rotation when safety workers were spotted on the track as Lawson was rejoining the race following an quick visit to the pits to change his damaged front wing

Driver's Immediate Reaction

Immediately after, the team's competitor Lawson radioed to his race engineer saying: "You've got to be joking? Did you witness that? I could have... killed them"

"I truly couldn't comprehend what I was witnessing"

"I came out on a brand new hard tyres, and then I arrived at Turn One and unexpectedly appeared two guys sprinting across the track"

"I came close to striking one of them, honestly, it was so dangerous"

Track Safety Questioned

"Obviously there's been a failure in communication somewhere but This is the first time I've faced that before, and I haven't previously witnessed that in the past. It's absolutely inexcusable"

"We can't understand how on a live track safety personnel can be authorized to just dash across the track like that. I have no idea why, I'm sure we'll get some form of reasoning, but it really can't happen again"

Formal Inquiry in Progress

The sport's regulatory authority, the global motorsport federation, is actively examining the circumstances

"Following a turn one incident, race control was notified that fragments were located on the track at the critical section of that bend" stated the regulatory authority

"During the third lap, safety personnel were alerted and made ready to access the circuit and clear the fragments once every vehicle had gone by"

"Immediately when it was understood that Lawson had entered the pits, the instructions to dispatch marshals were withdrawn and a double yellow flag was shown in that section"

"Our inquiry continues what happened after that point"
